Our Story
A Community for the Community Since 1926
Mount Lebanon’s original church building was built in 1926. The name was decided upon as a result of the landscape of the area. At the time, it was located at the corner of 57th and Hampton. The area was quite different than it is today - surrounded by farm fields and many, many cedar trees.
Cedar trees were used by Solomon in his temple; he imported these trees from Lebanon (1 Kings 5:6), and therefore, Lebanon was chosen as part of the name. As for Mount, well, if you notice, the church is built on a slight hill, therefore, Mount Lebanon became its name. Following the large growth of both church and school, the existing building on the corner of 60th and Hampton was erected and the school built just two years later.
Mount Lebanon has historically been a neighborhood church. There was a time when you would find the church packed with 500 people, but only 5 cars in the parking lot. People went to the church near them. So near, in fact, that they could walk! While membership has waxed and waned with changes in the neighborhood, we remain committed to serving our community. We desire to be a community for the community.
Our Mission
We are here to share and to show the forgiveness of God and the love of Jesus.
Our Vision
We are a community for the community. We share God’s Word to connect people to Jesus and to our caring, Christian community.
Our Values
ONE Faith
We preach and teach his Word.
We follow him and live by his Word.
We make his mission, ours.
Our ONE FAITH commitments:
We will hold tenaciously to his teaching.
We will teach his Word boldly.
We will do whatever we can to reach people with it.
ONE Ministry
We are one body of believers carrying out one ministry and Jesus’ mission, together.
The ministry of the church and school are one ministry.
We are all supporters of this one ministry.
Our ONE MINISTRY commitments:
We will not let anything divide us; God’s Word will unite us.
We won’t always do what I like; but we will do all things in love.
ONE Family
We are a family and a community of believers who walk in faith and through life, together.
We will work hard to care deeply about each other as a family of believers.
No one stands or sits alone. Everyone is welcome and is welcomed.
We will welcome everyone, especially guests, and make them feel at home.
The school family is part of the Mount family.
Our ONE FAMILY commitments:
We will walk together in faith and in life.
We will joyfully and eagerly welcome everyone into the family.
MANY Parts
Each person in this world is uniquely made by their creator.
Each of us is unique, created perfectly by God for works of service both according to how God has shaped and molded us through our diverse experiences and backgrounds, and according to the many different gifts that God has given us.
What makes us different, makes us better.
We will celebrate the diversity that exists in this world and within the family of believers.
We will equip, empower, and unleash the diverse members of this one body for works of service in the congregation and in the community.
Our MANY PARTS commitments:
We will partner do this work God has given us.
We will unleash you to serve him here, there, and everywhere.
True to our Lord’s great commission, Mount Lebanon certainly is “Go[ing] and make[ing] disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Matthew 28:19-20
Our Church
Mount Lebanon is affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) and continue to seek partnerships with those in our community, including the YMCA, Lighthouse Youth Center, the Center for Urban Teaching, and many others.
Our School
We also support a Christian school located on two different campuses. Mount Lebanon Lutheran School participates in the Milwaukee and Wisconsin School Choice program and therefore draws its student base from a much larger population than just our congregation. We are able to serve more and more students and families from our community.
