The Prophet’s Mantle: The Legacy

The Prophet’s Mantle: The Legacy

This Sunday we come to the close of our sermon series, The Prophet’s Mantle. Over the past several weeks, we’ve walked alongside Elijah and Elisha—two prophets who lived in turbulent times, yet trusted in the Lord who never fails. We’ve seen their courage, their struggles, and their faith. And now, as Elijah’s earthly ministry comes to an end, we turn to the theme of legacy.

A Changing of the Guard

Elijah’s time was up. He had spoken God’s Word boldly, performed miracles by God’s power, and stood firm against kings and armies. But like every servant of God, his work was never meant to last forever. So who would carry it on?

Elisha had been walking with Elijah for some time, learning from him and growing under his guidance. When the moment came for Elijah to be taken into heaven, Elisha didn’t ask for fame or position. He asked for a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit. He wanted to continue the mission, strengthened by God, carrying forward what Elijah had begun.

Three Questions for Us

The story of Elijah and Elisha isn’t just a historical account—it’s a mirror for our lives today. Their relationship invites us to ask three key questions:

1. Who are you learning from?

Elisha clung to Elijah until the very end, soaking up everything he could. Even Elijah, though the great prophet, needed constant growth from the Lord. Discipleship is not optional. Every one of us needs people we can learn from—mentors, teachers, examples of faith. Who has God placed in your life to shape and stretch you?

2. Who are you walking with?

Elijah and Elisha weren’t just teacher and student; they were companions in ministry. They encouraged one another and shared the journey. That’s why Elisha was able to carry the torch so well—he hadn’t been running alone. God designed us to live in community, to walk together in the church, to encourage and hold one another up. Who are you walking with right now?

3. Who are you raising up?

Perhaps the most challenging question of all: Who are you throwing your mantle over? Elijah took the time to invest in Elisha. He mentored, taught, and equipped him for the work ahead. In the same way, God calls us to pour into others—into our children, our friends, our church family—so that the gospel keeps moving forward. Who are you mentoring? Who are you equipping for a lifetime of faith and service?

Leaving a Christ-Centered Legacy

Legacy isn’t about the buildings we leave behind, or the possessions we pass on. Legacy is about faith—receiving it from those before us, walking with others in it today, and passing it on to those who come after us.

This is what Elijah did for Elisha. This is what the apostles did for the early church. And this is what Jesus himself has done for us. He walked with his disciples, taught them, equipped them, and then sent them out to carry his mission to the ends of the earth.

Your legacy in Christ is not measured by how much you accomplish, but by the faith that God works through you and into others.
